In 1996 the slasher film was all but dead (ironic isn’t it?). The horror sub-genre had kind of fizzled out in by the early 90s. But on December 20th, 1996, one of the true masters of horror director Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street) and writer Kevin Williamson would revive the slasher with the clever 4th wall-breaking meta movie, Scream. With its young cast and pop-culture references to other popular horror films such as Halloween, Scream would go on to gross $173 million with a budget of just under $15 million. Scream was so popular that audiences got a sequel just a year later. A third film would eventually follow a few years later. Today, Scream and its Ghostface killer who-done-it slasher murder mystery is a major horror movie franchise that continues to garner attention with the release of new films. In this first of our two-part series, Mark and Jason will discuss the original trilogy. Do you like scary movies?
